Discover more about First Baptist Church of Denver

The First Baptist Church of Denver, located at 1373 Grant St, is a historic church with a rich history dating back to 1864, just six years after the founding of Denver. Founded by Baptist missionary Walter McDuffie Potter, the church has grown into a significant landmark in the city. The current building, completed in 1938, is a stunning example of Georgian Revival architecture, designed by G. Meredith Musick. The church's architecture features a tall, 160-foot tower and a grand portico with granite Corinthian columns. The columns were crafted from granite quarried in Lyons, Colorado, and hand-polished on-site, making them the largest polished granite columns in the state at the time. The exterior also boasts Indiana limestone trim, adding to its elegant appearance. Throughout its history, the First Baptist Church of Denver has been deeply involved in social justice and community service. Reflecting this commitment, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached at the church on April 16, 1962. The church actively supports the community through various initiatives, including providing meals for those in need, shelter for the homeless, and a training center for immigrants and refugees. The church also provides space for non-profit organizations and hosts community events. The First Baptist Church of Denver is not only a place of worship but also a center for community engagement and social justice, welcoming people of all backgrounds and beliefs. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and is a contributing property to the Civic Center Historic District.
