Discover more about Genesee Park

Genesee Park, located just 20 miles west of Denver, is a sprawling 2,413-acre mountain park offering a diverse range of activities and stunning scenery. As the first reserve in the Denver Mountain Parks System, acquired in 1913, Genesee Park provides a natural escape with historical significance. The park's landscape varies from rolling meadows and mountain valleys to thick pine forests, with elevations reaching 8,284 feet at the summit of Genesee Mountain. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Front Range, explore hiking trails, and observe the park's famous bison herd. The bison, descendants of a herd from Yellowstone National Park, were introduced in 1914 as part of a conservation effort. Scenic overlooks along I-70 provide easy viewing opportunities. Several historical structures dot the park, including the Chief Hosa Lodge, designed by architect Jules Jacques Benedict and constructed in 1918. The lodge, named after Southern Arapahoe Chief Little Raven (Chief Hosa), is a rustic building made of native stone and logs. A large stone picnic shelter, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1939, offers another glimpse into the park's past. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore a variety of trails, including the historic Beaver Brook Trail, which connects to Lookout Mountain Park. The Braille Nature Trail offers interpretive signage in Braille and waist-high guidelines for visually impaired visitors. Camping is available at the Chief Hosa Campground from May to September.
