Discover more about Mount Galbraith Park

Mount Galbraith Park, a scenic jewel in Jefferson County, Colorado, offers a rewarding escape for hikers seeking stunning views and a moderately challenging workout. Situated near Golden, about 25 minutes from Denver, the park encompasses 875 acres of diverse terrain. Its network of trails, totaling nearly five miles, winds through rocky landscapes and offers breathtaking vistas. The park's history is intertwined with the early days of Colorado's gold rush. In 1859, Golden Gate City was founded near the mouth of Golden Gate Canyon, vying briefly to become the county seat. Prospectors traversed the ridges of Mount Galbraith on their way to the goldfields, and a rock quarry operated on the Clear Creek side of the park until the 1960s. Jefferson County Open Space acquired the land in 1995, preserving it for recreational use. The main trailhead, located off Golden Gate Canyon Road, provides access to several trails, including the popular Mount Galbraith Loop. This 1.6-mile loop circles the summit, offering continuous views of the surrounding landscape. Other trails, such as Cedar Gulch Trail and Nightbird Gulch Trail, provide varied hiking experiences, with Nightbird Gulch Trail being known for its steeper and more technical terrain. The trails are open from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Be aware that parking is limited and fills up quickly, especially on weekends. As you ascend, the trails reveal stunning views of North and South Table Mountain, the Denver skyline, and the majestic Continental Divide. The park is also a haven for wildlife, with opportunities to spot elk, bighorn sheep, golden eagles, and red-tailed hawks.
