The Denver Mint, a branch of the United States Mint, has been producing coins since February 1, 1906. Its history, however, dates back to the Pike's Peak Gold Rush when a private mint, Clark, Gruber & Co., was established in Denver in 1860. In 1863, the U.S. Treasury purchased the facility, initially operating it as an assay office. In 1904, the Mint moved to its current location on West Colfax Avenue, a building modeled after the Medici-Riccardi Palace in Florence, Italy. Today, the Denver Mint produces billions of coins annually for circulation, as well as mint sets and commemorative coins. Coins produced here bear the 'D' mint mark. The Denver Mint is the single largest producer of coins in the world. Free 45-minute guided tours are offered where visitors can learn about the Mint's history and witness the coin production process. Tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and it's recommended to arrive early, especially during peak season (May through September). Note that there is an extensive list of prohibited items, including all purses and bags, and no storage is provided.
