    The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad departs from the Durango Depot at 479 Main Ave. If you are in downtown Durango, the depot is easily accessible on foot. From most downtown locations, head north on Main Avenue until you reach the depot.

  • Public Transport

    Durango Transit offers bus and trolley services throughout the city. The Durango Trolley runs along Main Avenue from the Days Inn to College Drive (6th Street). The Lift lines connect at College Drive and Main Avenue, Fort Lewis College, and Albertson's. A ride on the Durango Transit typically costs $1.

  • Driving

    If driving, the Durango Depot is located at 479 Main Ave. Parking is available in the D&SNGRR parking lot at 209 W College Drive, next to the rail yard. Parking costs $10 for cars, trucks, and motorcycles. As an alternative, you can find free parking above 2nd Ave, but be sure to adhere to all signage. There is also an 'unloading zone' on Main Avenue near the Depot to drop off passengers before parking.

Originally built in 1882 to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, the line now offers a unique and family-friendly experience, combining Colorado's pioneering and mining history with unparalleled backcountry beauty. The train departs from Durango, traveling 45.2 miles to Silverton, climbing about 2,800 feet. The journey takes 3.5 hours each way, with a 2-hour layover in Silverton, allowing passengers to explore the historic mining town. The route follows the Animas River, offering stunning views of the San Juan Mountains, granite rocks, and occasional waterfalls. Passengers can choose to ride in various classes of service, including open-air gondolas and enclosed, climate-controlled cars. During the ride, there is no cell service or Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to disconnect from the modern world and soak in the views. Passengers can also visit the free D&S Roundhouse Museum at the Durango Depot, which houses a collection of artifacts and exhibits about Colorado's railroading and mining history. The museum is located in a part of the roundhouse that uniquely houses narrow gauge steam locomotives. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates year-round, with different routes and experiences depending on the season. From May to October, the train travels to Silverton, while during other times, it runs to Cascade Canyon. Special events like The Polar Express are also offered.
