Discover more about Smuggler Mine tours

The Smuggler Mine, nestled on Smuggler Mountain, stands as a testament to Aspen's silver mining heritage. Founded in 1879, the mine quickly rose to prominence during the Colorado Silver Boom, shaping Aspen from a small settlement into a thriving mining town. At its peak in the 1890s, the Smuggler Mine accounted for nearly one-fifth of the world's silver output. A symbol of its wealth was the discovery of a massive silver nugget weighing over 1,840 pounds. The mine's success attracted miners and investors, contributing to Aspen's rapid growth and infrastructure development. While many mines closed after the Silver Crash of 1893, the Smuggler Mine continued operations until 1918, providing employment and stability to the town. After a period of inactivity, mining resumed after World War II. Today, the Smuggler Mine is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers guided tours that delve into the mine's history, the challenges faced by miners, and the impact of silver mining on Aspen's identity. Visitors can explore the tunnels, view mining equipment, and hear stories of the individuals who shaped Aspen's silver mining legacy.
