Discover more about The Birch Ruins

The Birch Ruins, located in Estes Park, Colorado, mark the site of Albert Birch's former bungalow, offering visitors a unique window into the town's early 20th-century history. Albert Birch, a reporter for the Denver Post, fell in love with Estes Park and hired stonemason Carl Piltz to build a home on a rocky cliff overlooking the town in 1904. Birch named the home 'Jacob's Ladder' because of the steep climb required to reach it. Tragedy struck in December 1907 when a fire destroyed the bungalow, leaving only the stone walls and fireplace. Birch then built a cabin below the ruins, using it as a summer retreat until the 1980s. The Town of Estes Park acquired the land in 2002, preserving it as the Knoll-Willows Open Space. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and the cabin via a short, scenic trail. The site offers panoramic views of Estes Park, Longs Peak, and the Front Range Mountains. Interpretive panels along the trail tell the story of Albert Birch and the historical significance of the site. The Knoll-Willows Open Space is a 20-acre park behind the Estes Park Town Hall, Estes Valley Public Library, and police station complex.
