Discover more about Fort Collins City Park

Fort Collins City Park, a verdant jewel in the heart of the city, has been a community gathering place since 1907. Originally purchased from sheep rancher John Sheldon, the park has evolved into a dynamic space offering diverse activities and attractions. Its design, influenced by the City Beautiful movement, features broad green spaces and majestic trees, creating a pastoral atmosphere for recreation and reflection. The centerpiece of the park is Sheldon Lake, named after its original owner. While swimming is no longer permitted, the lake is a popular spot for fishing, with annual stocking by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Anglers can try their luck catching bass, sunfish, crappie, trout, and catfish. A path encircles the lake, offering scenic views and a pleasant walking experience. In winter, Sheldon Lake transforms into a hub for ice skating and pond hockey. Beyond the lake, City Park boasts numerous amenities, including tennis courts, sports fields, walking trails, and picnic areas. A playground and a miniature replica of the Statue of Liberty add to the park's charm. The City Park Pool, built in 1952, offers a place to beat the summer heat. The park also hosts major community events, such as the annual Fourth of July fireworks display and the Foco Food Truck Rally every Tuesday in the summer. Throughout its history, City Park has served as a vital element in shaping Fort Collins' community character. From its early days as a campground for westward travelers to its current role as a recreational and social hub, the park has adapted to the changing needs of the city while maintaining its commitment to providing a space for all to enjoy.
