Old Town Square: The Heart of Fort Collins

Old Town Square, located in the heart of Fort Collins, Colorado, serves as the city's central gathering place and a vibrant hub of activity. Originally constructed in 1983/1984, the square was the vision of Gene Mitchell, who partnered with the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority (DDA) to create a space that blends historic preservation with modern amenities. Before its transformation into a pedestrian-friendly plaza, the 100 block of Linden Street was a through street for vehicle traffic. Today, Old Town Square hosts a variety of events, including free concerts, live performances, and community gatherings. Its interactive features, such as a state-of-the-art performance stage, a kid and dog-friendly splash pad (operational May-September), a communal fireplace, a children's play area, and a Little Free Library, contribute to its appeal. Rotating public art installations add to the square's dynamic atmosphere. Old Town Square's design, with its well-preserved historic buildings, is said to have inspired Disneyland's Main Street USA.
