The Old Colorado City Historical Society & History Center is a treasure trove of local history, preserving and sharing the unique story of Old Colorado City and El Paso County. Founded in 1976, the History Center is housed in a historic building that once served as a grocery store and post office. Inside, visitors can explore a variety of exhibits showcasing the region's rich past. See artifacts, photographs, and documents that illustrate the lives of early settlers, the excitement of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, and the growth of local industries and transportation. One popular exhibit features vintage firefighting equipment and tells the story of the local fire department. The interactive Children's Discovery Area offers a fun, hands-on learning experience for young visitors, with period costumes and vintage toys. The History Center also maintains a reference library and collections department where visitors can access historical records with the help of research volunteers. The library contains city directories, books, magazines, and news clippings related to the history of the region. The Old Colorado City Historical Society also maintains collections of artifacts and archives contributed by people and families from the surrounding area, as well as a photograph collection showing the development of the Pikes Peak region from the Civil War era through today. The museum is free to enter and is operated by volunteers who are passionate about local history.
