Sayre Park, a 7.6-acre oasis in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, serves as a central gathering place for locals and tourists. The park boasts a rich history, evolving from a livestock grazing property in the 1930s to a vital community space. James Sayre, a geologist, purchased the land and later leased it to the U.S. government for a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp in 1938. This camp housed 200 men who worked on improving the Red Mountain ski area and the Glenwood Springs airport. During World War II, the site served as a prisoner-of-war camp for two years. In the 1940s, Sayre donated the land to the city, stipulating that it remain a public park. Today, Sayre Park offers a variety of recreational amenities, including open green spaces, a playground, volleyball and horseshoe areas, picnic shelters, basketball and tennis courts, and a baseball/soccer field. The park is also a popular venue for events, including the annual Strawberry Days festival, a Glenwood Springs tradition since 1898.
