Discover more about Devil's Kitchen Picnic Area

The Devil's Kitchen Picnic Area, located just inside the east entrance of Colorado National Monument, is a popular destination for families, hikers, and those seeking a scenic spot to enjoy the outdoors. The area's name comes from the unique rock formations that create a natural amphitheater, inviting exploration and providing a dramatic backdrop for picnics and gatherings. The picnic area itself features a large, rustic stone shelter constructed in 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This shelter, built in the National Park Service Rustic style using locally quarried sandstone, offers shaded picnic tables and a glimpse into the area's history. The shelter is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Beyond the picnic facilities, the Devil's Kitchen area serves as a trailhead for several hiking paths, including a trail into the Devil's Kitchen rock formation itself, and access to the Old Gordon Trail and No Thoroughfare Canyon. These trails offer varying levels of difficulty, from easy strolls to more challenging climbs, ensuring there's something for every adventurer. Visitors can enjoy the convenience of restrooms (open seasonally), drinking water, and garbage/recycling facilities. The picnic area is generally open from 7 am to 5 pm, and while there's no fee to use the picnic area itself, entrance to the Colorado National Monument requires a fee or a valid park pass. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, and be aware of potential mountain lion sightings in the area.
