    Los Caminos Antiguos is a 129-mile loop that can be accessed from several points. A popular starting point is Alamosa, where you can pick up Highway 17. From Alamosa, you can head north towards Mosca and the Great Sand Dunes National Park, or south towards the historic towns of San Luis and Antonito. The route is well-marked, but it's advisable to have a map, especially if you plan to explore some of the side roads. Keep in mind that some roads may be unpaved. There is no fee to drive the byway itself, but entrance fees apply for the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

  • Public Transport

    While public transportation directly along the entire Los Caminos Antiguos Byway is limited, you can use the Bustang Outrider bus service to reach Alamosa, a major town along the route. From Alamosa, you can explore sections of the byway by car or connect to local transportation options. The Bustang Alamosa-Pueblo route connects the San Luis Valley with the Central Front Range. A one-way fare from Pueblo to Alamosa costs around $28. From Alamosa, local taxi services or rental cars can be used to access different points along the byway.
