Getting There

  • Driving

    From Mosca, Colorado, head north on Highway 17 for approximately 1 mile. Turn east onto Lane 6 N and continue for about 7.5 miles until you reach the San Luis State Wildlife Area. The entrance will be on your left. Parking is available within the SWA. There are no fees for parking, but a valid hunting or fishing license or a State Wildlife Area Access Permit is required for anyone 16 or older.

San Luis State Wildlife Area (SWA), formerly San Luis State Park, is a captivating destination nestled in the San Luis Valley, near Mosca, Colorado. Bordering the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the SWA boasts exceptional views of San Luis Lake, the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and the towering dunes themselves. This high-desert oasis offers a diverse range of recreational activities and a chance to connect with nature. Established as a state park in 1993, the area transitioned to a State Wildlife Area in 2017. Today, the 3,317-acre SWA serves as a vital habitat for a variety of wildlife, including elk, coyotes, kangaroo rats, rabbits, songbirds, raptors, reptiles, and amphibians. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting various species of waterfowl and other birds that call the area home. The SWA provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Anglers can enjoy year-round trout fishing in San Luis Lake, water levels permitting. When conditions allow, the lake is also popular for motorboating, personal watercraft, sailing, water skiing, and windsurfing. The area north of San Luis Lake is open for hunting big game, waterfowl, and small game during established seasons, but is closed from February 15 to July 15 annually. Camping is a popular activity at the SWA, with 51 campsites available. Each site is equipped with electrical hookups, a sheltered table, and a fire grill. While there is a dump station and toilets, campers must bring their own water. The campground offers stunning views of the lake, mountains, and dunes. Keep in mind that the campground can be windy due to the open desert landscape. Visitors can also explore the area on foot or by bike. Four miles of wide, gravel trails wind through the SWA. For a more challenging hike, nearby Zapata Falls offers a short but steep trail to a stunning waterfall. Alternatively, visitors can hike up the Great Sand Dunes for an unforgettable experience.
