Discover more about Aspen Mountain Ski Resort

Aspen Mountain, affectionately called Ajax by locals, is more than just a ski resort; it's a landmark that embodies Aspen's rich skiing history. Founded in 1946 by Walter Paepcke, it was the first venture of the Aspen Skiing Company and quickly put Aspen on the map as a premier ski destination. Unlike its sister mountains, Aspen Mountain caters primarily to intermediate and advanced skiers, with no beginner runs. This creates a thrilling experience for seasoned skiers who enjoy steep, challenging terrain and gladed areas. The mountain boasts 673 skiable acres, with 76 runs accessible by nine lifts. The Silver Queen Gondola, a 15 to 20-minute ride to the summit, offers panoramic views of the surrounding Elk Mountains. Aspen Mountain's history is deeply intertwined with the 10th Mountain Division, who trained nearby during World War II and recognized the area's potential for skiing. After the war, many veterans returned to help develop the resort, including Friedl Pfeifer, who started Aspen's first ski school. In 1950, Aspen hosted the FIS World Championships, solidifying its place in skiing history as the first world championships held outside of Europe. Today, Aspen Mountain continues to evolve, with recent additions like the new Hero's terrain and a high-speed quad lift, adding 153 acres of diverse terrain. Whether you're carving down the slopes, enjoying the views from the Sundeck, or indulging in the après-ski scene at Ajax Tavern, Aspen Mountain offers an unforgettable experience that blends skiing history with modern thrills.
