    Discover more about Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock, an iconic landmark within Colorado Springs' Garden of the Gods, is a testament to the power of nature's artistry. This colossal sandstone boulder stands approximately 35 feet tall and weighs an estimated 1.4 million pounds. Its seemingly impossible balance on a narrow base captivates visitors, making it one of the most photographed features in the park. Formed over millions of years through the gradual erosion of softer rock layers, Balanced Rock is a remnant of the geological shifts that shaped the Rocky Mountains. The red hue of the rock comes from hematite, a form of iron oxide. In the late 19th century, recognizing its tourist appeal, the Goerke family acquired the land and charged visitors 25 cents to view the formation. Curt Goerke, at the young age of 14, started charging tourists to take photographs of them with the rock. This practice continued until 1932 when the land was sold to the City of Colorado Springs, integrating Balanced Rock into the free Garden of the Gods park. Located near the southern entrance of Garden of the Gods, Balanced Rock is easily accessible and offers several parking spaces nearby. The park is open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (until 10:00 p.m. in the summer). Visitors are encouraged to stay on marked trails, keep dogs leashed, and refrain from climbing without a permit.
