Discover more about Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods, a 1,341.3-acre public park in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a spectacle of nature's artistry. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971, the park's towering red rock formations were created millions of years ago during the Laramide Orogeny. These sandstone rocks, once part of the Ancestral Rockies, were shaped by erosion and glacial forces, revealing ancient sea remains and fascinating geological features. Archaeological evidence indicates that prehistoric people visited Garden of the Gods as early as 1330 BC. Native American tribes, including the Apache, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Lakota, Pawnee, Shoshone, and Ute, have long held a connection to the area, using it as a neutral ground for trade and respecting its peaceful nature. The Ute people, in particular, consider Garden of the Gods as their place of creation. The park's name originated in 1859 when two surveyors, Melancthon S. Beach and Rufus Cable, explored the area. While Beach suggested it as a "capital place for a beer garden," Cable declared it "a fit place for the Gods to assemble," thus christening it Garden of the Gods. In 1879, Charles Elliott Perkins, a friend of William Jackson Palmer, acquired 480 acres of the land. His family gifted the land to the City of Colorado Springs in 1909, stipulating that it remain free and open to the public. Today, Garden of the Gods offers a variety of activities, including hiking, nature walks, rock climbing, and guided tours. The Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center, located at 1805 N. 30th Street, provides interactive exhibits, educational presentations, and stunning views of the park. Visitors can explore the park's history, geology, and ecology, and enjoy the cafe and gift shop.
