Discover more about Paint Mines Interpretive Park

Paint Mines Interpretive Park, a hidden gem on the plains of eastern El Paso County, Colorado, beckons visitors with its otherworldly landscape of vibrant clay formations. Located near Calhan, about 40 miles east of Colorado Springs, the park's 750 acres hold a unique combination of geological, archaeological, and ecological significance. The park's name derives from the colorful clays that Native Americans collected and used for pottery and ceremonial paints. These brightly colored bands – golden yellow, rose pink, snowy white, and mauve – are caused by oxidized iron compounds found in varying amounts throughout the clay layers. The geological formations, including hoodoos (clay spires capped with sandstone), incised gullies, and exposed layers of selenite clay and jasper, have been sculpted by wind and water erosion over millions of years. This is one of only a few locations in the country with such unique formations. Archaeological evidence indicates human life in the area as far back as 9,000 years ago. The plants, animals, and colorful clays drew prehistoric people to the area for centuries. The park is listed as an Archaeological District in the National Register of Historic Places. Today, visitors can explore the park's four miles of trails, observe native wildlife, and learn about the area's natural and cultural history through interpretive signage. The park offers guided hikes and field trips, providing deeper insights into the geology, ecology, and human history of the site. Whether you're a photographer seeking breathtaking scenery, a hiker looking for an easy adventure, or a nature enthusiast eager to explore a unique ecosystem, Paint Mines Interpretive Park offers a memorable experience.
