Driving

Lava Cliffs Overlook is located on Trail Ridge Road (US-34) in Rocky Mountain National Park. From Estes Park, enter the park and follow Trail Ridge Road for approximately 22 miles. The overlook will be on your right, marked by a designated parking area. Note that a timed entry permit may be required to enter the park during certain times of the year. Parking at the overlook is free, but can be limited during peak season.

Lava Cliffs Overlook is a scenic viewpoint located along Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. At an elevation of approximately 12,080 feet, the overlook provides visitors with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the unique lava cliffs. These cliffs are a result of volcanic activity that occurred millions of years ago in the nearby Never Summer Mountains. Volcanic debris blanketed the land, and one flow of hot ash cooled to form the hard rock visible today. Later, glacial ice carved into the hillside, exposing a cross-section of Precambrian rock and creating the lava cliffs.The overlook is easily accessible via a medium-sized parking turnout along Trail Ridge Road, with a paved sidewalk offering universal access around the area. From the parking lot, visitors can enjoy views of the Lava Cliffs to the west and Mount Chapin and Mount Chiquita to the east. The area is also home to various wildlife, including marmots. Due to its high altitude, Lava Cliffs Overlook is a great place for visitors to acclimate to the elevation while taking in the natural beauty.Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States, is a scenic byway that connects Estes Park and Grand Lake. The road is typically open from late May to mid-October, depending on snow conditions. During the winter months, the road is closed due to heavy snowfall.
