Discover more about The Meeker Home Museum

The Meeker Home Museum offers a unique glimpse into the life of Nathan Cook Meeker, the founder of Greeley, Colorado, and his family. Built in 1870, this two-story adobe brick home, designed by architect Arthur Hotchkiss, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Meeker, an agricultural editor for the New York Tribune, envisioned a utopian farming community in the American West. With the backing of Horace Greeley, the newspaper's editor, Meeker recruited hundreds of colonists to establish a settlement near the confluence of the Cache la Poudre and South Platte Rivers in April 1870. The Meeker Home Museum stands as a testament to this dream. Inside the museum, visitors can explore cherished artifacts and furnishings original to the home, including a 10-foot tall diamond dust mirror, a tall case clock, and Meeker's cherrywood desk. Interpretive panels on the museum grounds share historical facts, maps, and images about the town's history, Horace Greeley, and the Meeker family. The museum provides insight into the lives of the Meeker family and the challenges and triumphs of early settlement in the American West. While the second floor is not accessible via elevator, a narrated walk-through of the second floor is presented on the first floor.
