Discover more about Austin Bluffs Open Space

Austin Bluffs Open Space is a nearly 1,000-acre natural area in the heart of Colorado Springs, offering a diverse landscape of sandstone bluffs, native prairie, and ponderosa pine groves. The open space features approximately 10 miles of designated trails, catering to various activities such as hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. These trails wind through the varied terrain, providing access to the foot of the bluffs and across the landscape toward Pulpit Rock. The trails range from easy to moderate in difficulty, with surfaces of both paved and gravel. However, wayfinding can be challenging due to limited signage and user-created paths. The area's unique geological formations date back to the Eocene period and include sedimentary sandstone and arkosic sandstone units. These formations were shaped by geological uplift around 65 to 70 million years ago. The bluffs themselves served as natural corrals for shepherds and cowherds in the late 1800s. Before that, indigenous peoples sourced materials from the bluffs for creating stone tools. Archaeological evidence suggests Native American presence in the area as far back as 10,000 years ago. Today, Austin Bluffs Open Space is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, red foxes, and various bird species. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Colorado Springs and the distant Rocky Mountains from several vantage points within the open space. The City of Colorado Springs actively manages the open space to balance public access, recreation, and resource protection.
