Discover more about Colorado State Capitol

The Colorado State Capitol Building, located at 200 E Colfax Avenue in Denver, stands as a testament to Colorado's history and architectural grandeur. Completed in 1901 after construction began in 1886, this iconic structure serves as home to the Colorado General Assembly and the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Treasurer. Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, it intentionally mirrors the U.S. Capitol Building, reflecting a neoclassical style. The exterior is constructed from white granite quarried in Gunnison, Colorado. The distinctive gold dome, first gilded in 1908 to commemorate the Colorado Gold Rush, is covered in copper panels with gold leaf from a Colorado mine. Inside, visitors can admire the rare Colorado Rose Onyx, a rose marble found near Beulah, and the Yule Marble used for the floors. Many designs have been found in the marble including an image resembling George Washington and another of Molly Brown. Stained glass windows depict significant events and figures in Colorado history. Free guided tours are offered on weekdays, providing insights into the building's history, art, and government functions. Tours include the House and Senate Chambers, recently restored to their historic appearance, and a climb to the dome observation area. The dome is accessible only by stairs. The Capitol is open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. A notable feature is the "Mile High" marker on the west steps, indicating Denver's elevation of one mile above sea level. Over time, resurveys led to the installation of additional markers on different steps to reflect more accurate measurements.
