Cano's Castle: A Beer Can Masterpiece

Cano's Castle, located in the small town of Antonito, Colorado, is a dazzling and unconventional architectural marvel. Built by Dominic "Cano" Espinoza, a Vietnam veteran, the castle is a tribute to God for sparing his life during the war. Construction began in the 1980s and continues to this day, making it a constantly evolving work of art. The castle is constructed primarily from recycled materials, including beer cans, hubcaps, wire, screen doors, grills, and other metal scraps. The four distinct towers – "the king," "the queen," "the rook," and "the palace" – rise approximately 40 feet, shimmering in the sun. The vibrant colors and intricate designs reflect Cano's deep appreciation for nature and community. Visitors can view the castle from the roadside at the corner of State St. & E. 10th Ave. While the castle is private property and not open for public access, its unique and striking appearance makes it a popular stop for those traveling through the San Luis Valley.
