Discover more about John Denver Sanctuary

The John Denver Sanctuary, located in the heart of Aspen, Colorado, is a touching tribute to the beloved singer-songwriter who called Aspen home for many years. This 4.5-acre sanctuary, nestled next to Rio Grande Park and the Roaring Fork River, offers a tranquil escape and a chance to connect with nature and the music of John Denver. Following Denver's tragic death in 1997, the city of Aspen collaborated with Annie Denver, John's first wife, to create a space that reflected his passion for the environment and his musical legacy. The sanctuary was dedicated on August 15, 1998, and has since become a cherished spot for locals and tourists alike. The sanctuary features a Song Garden, where native river boulders are engraved with lyrics from Denver's most iconic songs, such as "Rocky Mountain High," "Sunshine on My Shoulders," and "Annie's Song". These boulders are arranged in a circle, symbolizing the circle of life, and a Colorado Blue Spruce stands at the center, representing Denver's spirit. The site also includes man-made wetlands and winding streams that act as a stormwater filter system, cleaning the water before it enters the Roaring Fork River. The sanctuary also boasts one of the largest perennial flower gardens open to the public, adding to the friendly atmosphere for visitors. Visitors can stroll through the gardens, meditate by the river, or simply relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The sanctuary is open from dawn to dusk year-round and offers a peaceful retreat for contemplation and connection with nature. The sanctuary provides benches and picnic tables for visitors. It's a place where music lovers, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking solace can come together to celebrate the life and legacy of John Denver.
