Discover more about Holden Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum

The Holden Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum offers a glimpse into Aspen's transformation from a silver mining boomtown to a ranching community. Situated on the grounds of the former Holden Lixiviation Works, the museum showcases the industrial and agricultural heritage of the Roaring Fork Valley. The Holden Lixiviation Works, established in 1891, was a state-of-the-art facility designed to extract silver from low-grade ore. Although technologically advanced for its time, the mill operated for only 14 months before going bankrupt due to the demonetization of silver. The Marolt family purchased the property in 1940 and used it for ranching, combining two significant aspects of Aspen's history on one site. The museum features restored buildings, including the original salt shed and the sampling building, which houses exhibits and machinery. Visitors can also explore the relocated and restored McMurchy/Zupancis cabin and outbuildings, offering a glimpse into Aspen's Victorian era and the lives of immigrant families. Operational mining and ranching machinery are on display, with demonstrations held on select days. The museum property is part of the Marolt Open Space and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
