Discover more about Judges Cave

Judges Cave, located within New Haven's West Rock Ridge State Park, is a site steeped in history and natural beauty. This rock formation provided temporary shelter for Edward Whalley and William Goffe, two English judges who signed the death warrant of King Charles I in 1649. Following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Charles II sought to punish those involved in his father's execution, prompting Whalley and Goffe to flee to the New Haven Colony.Local residents helped the judges hide in the cave for about a month in 1661. According to historical accounts, the men were eventually driven from the cave after encountering a panther. Despite its name, Judges Cave is more of a rock overhang than a traditional cave.Today, visitors can explore Judges Cave and the surrounding West Rock Ridge State Park. The park offers hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and opportunities to connect with nature. The Regicides Trail leads to the cave, and a historical marker commemorates the judges' time there. From the park, one can enjoy views of New Haven and Long Island Sound.
