Tarrywile Mansion: A Victorian Gem in Danbury

Tarrywile Mansion, a centerpiece of Tarrywile Park in Danbury, Connecticut, offers a glimpse into Victorian elegance and local history. Built in 1897 by Dr. William Conrad Wile, Danbury's first chief medical examiner, the 23-room shingle-style mansion is a prime example of Shingle-style architecture. Wile, a Civil War veteran, chose the name Tarrywile as a play on words, inviting visitors to 'tarry a while'. In 1910, the mansion was sold to Charles Darling Parks, president of the American Hatters and Furriers Company. Parks expanded the property and added the stunning Conservatory, now a popular spot for wedding photos. The Parks family maintained the property until 1985 when the City of Danbury purchased it. Today, Tarrywile Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a community and conference center. The mansion hosts various events, including weddings, parties, and business functions. Visitors can explore the mansion's gardens, featuring designs by English-trained gardener Frederick Fearn, and hike the park's extensive trail system. The 722-acre park offers diverse landscapes, including woodlands, ponds, and picnic areas. Tarrywile Park also features the ruins of Hearthstone Castle, adding a touch of mystery to the park's historical appeal.
