Putnam Memorial State Park: Connecticut's Revolutionary War Encampment

Putnam Memorial State Park, often called "Connecticut's Valley Forge," is a history-rich destination in Redding, Connecticut. Established in 1887, it stands as Connecticut's oldest state park, commemorating the winter encampment of General Israel Putnam's troops during the American Revolutionary War. During the winter of 1778-1779, approximately 3,000 soldiers from Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey were stationed here to protect the Hudson River Valley and Long Island Sound.Visitors can explore the park's 183 acres, discovering reconstructed log cabins that depict the harsh living conditions endured by the soldiers. The Putnam Monument, a towering granite obelisk erected in 1888, honors General Putnam's leadership and the sacrifices made by his troops. The park also features the remains of the original encampment, including chimney firebacks from the soldiers' huts.The Visitor Center, originally built in 1893 as a recreation pavilion and restored in 2005, offers informational kiosks and historical artifacts. The museum displays artifacts unearthed at the park and donated items, providing insights into colonial life and the experiences of the soldiers stationed there. Visitors can also see Anna Hyatt Huntington's iconic statue of General Putnam on horseback.Beyond its historical significance, Putnam Memorial State Park offers recreational activities such as hiking, picnicking, and pond fishing. The park's interpretive trail leads to key destinations, including Philip's Cave, a rock shelter used by Native Americans.
