Discover more about Old Town Hall

The Old Town Hall, located on Greenwich Avenue, stands as a testament to Greenwich's rich history and architectural heritage. Completed in 1905, this Beaux-Arts building was designed by Mowbray and Uffinger and built by W.J. Smith. The construction was generously funded by Robert Moffat Bruce and his sister, Sarah E. Bruce, prominent local philanthropists. Bruce was a New York City cotton merchant who dedicated much of his time and money to the betterment of Greenwich. Besides the Old Town Hall, Bruce also donated his home to the town in 1908, which became the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science, and land for Bruce Park. The building itself is a sight to behold, featuring a three-story vertical cube design with single-story wings. The first floor is constructed of rusticated stone, while the upper floors boast a more refined finish, adorned with two-story Ionic columns that rise to a mansard roof. A copper cornice and a domed cupola with a clock add to its architectural charm. In 1962, one-story wings were added, and in 2018, a ramp was constructed to improve accessibility, both complementing the original design. Originally the seat of the town government, the Old Town Hall played a central role in Greenwich's civic life until 1977 when the government offices moved to a new location. Today, the building serves as a Senior/Arts Center, hosting various community events and activities. The Old Town Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 21, 1987.
