Discover more about East River Esplanade

The East River Esplanade, also known as the East River Greenway, is a 9.44-mile-long waterfront pathway for pedestrians and cyclists on Manhattan's East Side. Forming the edge of Manhattan as it meets the East River, the Esplanade is a vital part of New York City's greenway system. The park varies as one travels along it, with sections maintained by different groups and featuring various designs. Acquired in 1939 due to the construction of the FDR Drive, the Esplanade was part of a city effort to improve living conditions in crowded Lower Manhattan. Borough President Samuel Levy envisioned it transforming the East Side from a slum into a beautiful residential district. In 1866, Central Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux proposed a greenway system, but it wasn't until the 1993 Greenway Master Plan that connected open spaces became a priority. Mayor Michael Bloomberg further championed waterfront renewal in the early 2000s, envisioning a recreational path ringing the entire borough. Today, the East River Esplanade offers landscaped walking paths, benches, playgrounds, and open areas for picnics. It also hosts public art installations and community events, adding to its cultural appeal. Key features include the East 34th Street Ferry Landing and the Brooklyn Bridge Esplanade.
