Discover more about Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center

The Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center, located at 82 N Broadway in Nyack, New York, is the birthplace and childhood home of one of America's most renowned artists, Edward Hopper. Born in this house on July 22, 1882, Hopper lived here for the first 26 years of his life, and the house remained in his family until his sister Marion's death in 1965. The house itself, built in 1858 by Hopper's maternal grandfather, John Smith, is a beautiful example of mid-19th-century Greek Revival architecture with a Queen Anne-style addition. The museum's mission is to celebrate Edward Hopper's legacy by preserving his family home and archive, serving as a resource for scholars and artists, and nurturing community engagement with the arts. Visitors can explore exhibitions of 20th-century and contemporary art, including early Hopper artworks, memorabilia, and rotating exhibits related to Edward Hopper. The museum also showcases the creative riverside village of Nyack that inspired Hopper's ideas about light, color, and artistic subject matter in his paintings. Edward Hopper's artistic vision coalesced during his youth in Nyack, where he displayed a talent for drawing early on. His parents fostered his creativity, and his childhood home influenced his interpretation of light and space in his paintings. Hopper's key Nyack years extend from the late 1880s to 1899 when he graduated from Nyack High School. He then began commuting to New York City to attend school for illustration and fine art. The Edward Hopper House Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
