Once the summer residence of Edith Morton Chase, daughter of Henry Sabin Chase, the first president of Chase Brass and Copper Company, this state forest offers a unique blend of natural landscapes and historical charm. The heart of Topsmead is the English Tudor Revival cottage, completed in 1925 and designed by architect Richard Henry Dana. The cottage, furnished with 17th and 18th-century English country antiques, reflects the understated wealth and refined taste of its former owner. Free guided tours of the cottage are available from June through October on the 2nd and 4th weekends of the month. Beyond the cottage, visitors can explore diverse landscapes, including formal gardens, wildflower meadows, woodlands, and trails. The Orintas Family Butterfly Garden and the Edith Morton Chase Ecology Trail offer opportunities to discover the area's ecology, plants, and wildlife. Topsmead's grasslands are also designated as an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Topsmead offers year-round passive recreation, including walking, picnicking, bird watching, sledding, and cross-country skiing.
