Black Rock State Park: A Western Highlands Gem

Black Rock State Park, nestled in the rolling hills of Connecticut's Western Highlands, offers a diverse landscape across its 444 acres. From steep, wooded ledges of pine, hemlock, and oak surrounding Black Rock Pond to the commanding rock face known as Black Rock, the park provides ample opportunities for adventure, solitude, and family fun. The park's name has both factual and legendary origins. The Mohegan, Paugussett, and Tunxis tribes first explored the land, leaving behind artifacts still discovered today. In 1657, settlers in the Naugatuck Valley were granted rights by these tribes to mine graphite lead, or "black rock". This darker-colored rock material gave the park its enduring name. In 1926, Black Rock was officially established as a state park through the efforts of Black Rock Forest, Incorporated, a conservation group dedicated to woodland preservation. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) further developed the park in the 1930s, building access roads and facilities. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities. Hike the Mattatuck Trail, part of the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trail system, for scenic views of the Naugatuck Valley. Side trails offer glimpses of Black Rock Lake and Black Rock Pond. Black Rock Pond is also popular for swimming and fishing and is regularly stocked with trout. The park features a campground with 78 campsites and four rustic cabins, providing a perfect base for exploring the area.
