Burr Pond State Park, a 438-acre recreational area in Torrington, Connecticut, provides a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The park's centerpiece, Burr Pond, is an 85-acre man-made lake created in 1851 when Milo Burr dammed several streams to power his tannery and sawmills.
From 1857 to 1861, one of Burr's buildings housed Gail Borden's first commercially successful condensed milk factory. This innovation proved invaluable, particularly for the Union Army during the Civil War. Though the factory burned down in 1877, visitors can still see the stone foundations near Burr Mountain Road, marked with signs and a bronze tablet.
Today, Burr Pond State Park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. During the warmer months, visitors can swim in the lifeguard-supervised swimming area, rent canoes and kayaks to explore the pond, or fish for largemouth bass, chain pickerel, and other species. A boat launch is available at the north end of the pond.
The park also features well-maintained hiking trails, including the 2.25-mile Walcott Trail loop around the pond and a 2-mile section of the John Muir Trail that connects to Sunnybrook State Park. These trails offer scenic views and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Picnic areas with tables and grills are available for visitors to enjoy.
Parking at Burr Pond State Park is limited, and the park may close when capacity is reached. The park is open from 8 am to sunset.

Driving
Burr Pond State Park is located off Burr Mountain Road in Torrington, CT. From Route 8, take Exit 46 and follow the signs for Burr Pond State Park. Parking is available within the park, but it is limited and can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. There are no fees for Connecticut registered vehicles, thanks to the Passport to the Parks program. Non-residents may have to pay a parking fee on weekends and holidays. Be aware that there is no alternative parking, and cars parked illegally on local roads may be ticketed or towed.
Walking
If you are staying in nearby lodging, such as the Inn at Highland Lake (approximately 3.3 miles away), you can walk to the park via local roads. Be aware that Burr Mountain Road has limited shoulder space, so exercise caution and wear bright clothing. The walk is moderately challenging due to some hills. There are no public transportation options directly to the park.
