    Discover more about Mohawk Overlook

Mohawk Overlook, situated within Mohawk State Forest in Litchfield, Connecticut, provides breathtaking, long-range views from the summit of Mohawk Mountain. At 1,683 feet, the overlook offers vistas of the Taconic Mountains and Berkshire Mountains to the north and northwest, including sights of Bear Mountain, Canaan Mountain, and the Catskill Mountains on a clear day. Mohawk State Forest, also known as Mohawk Mountain State Park, spans over 4,000 acres across Cornwall, Goshen, and Litchfield. Managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the forest is a destination for hiking, picnicking, and winter sports. The area is also actively managed for timber and forest products. The overlook's name originates from the Mohawk Indians, although they did not inhabit this specific area. It is believed that the Tunxis and Paugussett tribes used the mountain for smoke signals to warn of approaching Mohawks. Visitors can also explore the nearby Cunningham Tower, a gutted stone structure built in 1912 by Litchfield resident Seymour Cunningham. While the tower is no longer accessible, it serves as a historical marker within the forest. The Mohawk and Mattatuck Trails, major parts of the Connecticut Blue Trail system, traverse Mohawk State Forest, offering hikers a chance to explore the area's natural beauty.
