Discover more about East Rock Park

East Rock Park, a prominent landmark in the New Haven area, offers a diverse range of experiences for visitors. The park's formation dates back 200 million years when molten rock surged through the sandstone bedrock, creating the dolerite ridge that is now East Rock. This geological history is evident in the park's rugged cliffs and rocky outcrops. The park's landscape was designed by Donald Grant Mitchell and the Olmsted Brothers in the late 1870s. Today, visitors can explore over 10 miles of hiking trails that wind through woodlands and meadows. The Giant Steps Trail offers a challenging climb to the summit, while other trails provide easier routes for leisurely walks. The summit is accessible by foot, bicycle, or car, offering stunning views of New Haven, the harbor, and Long Island Sound. East Rock Park also features several historical and cultural attractions. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, erected in 1887, honors New Haven men who gave their lives in various wars. The Trowbridge Environmental Center offers displays and information about the local flora and fauna. The Pardee Rose Garden, with its tiered structure and extensive rose collection, is a popular spot for wedding photos. Throughout the year, East Rock Park hosts various events and activities, including ranger programs, educational programs, and recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, bird watching, and sports such as baseball, basketball, and ice skating. The park is also a popular spot for sledding in the winter.
