Founded in 2006 by Scott Vaccaro, the brewery has grown from a small operation in Pleasantville to a 33,000-square-foot award-winning destination in Elmsford. Vaccaro's journey began with home brewing at age 17 and led him to study fermentation science at UC Davis. Captain Lawrence offers a wide array of beers, producing as many as one hundred brands annually. The brewery gained early recognition for its sour and barrel-aged beers, winning its first of nine Great American Beer Festival (GABF) medals in 2007. Today, they are also known for their fresh IPAs, drinkable lagers, and flavorful stouts. Popular beers include Hop Commander, Freshchester Pale Ale, Citra Dreams, and seasonal offerings. The Elmsford brewery features a tasting room and a full-service restaurant that opened in May 2019. In addition, Captain Lawrence operates the Mt Kisco Barrel House in Mount Kisco, NY, which opened in October 2020. The brewery is family-friendly, with a large beer garden. However, some rules have been put in place to ensure that the relaxed atmosphere does not negatively affect the experience of other guests. Captain Lawrence also offers brewery tours, providing insight into the brewing process. The brewery uses locally-sourced ingredients and donates spent grain to local farmers.
