Fayerweather Island Light: A Beacon of History

Fayerweather Island Light, a beacon of Bridgeport's maritime history, stands proudly on Fayerweather Island, guarding the entrance to Black Rock Harbor. The island, now connected to the mainland via a breakwater, is accessible through Seaside Park. The original lighthouse, a wooden tower, was built in 1808 but was destroyed by a hurricane in 1821. The current lighthouse, constructed in 1823, is made of durable sandstone ashlar with rubble mortar, designed to withstand the test of time. Over its 125 years of operation, the lighthouse had only nine keepers, one of the most remarkable being Kate Moore, who is credited with saving the lives of twenty-one people. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1932 and given to the City of Bridgeport, becoming part of Seaside Park. Although the keeper's house burned down in 1977, the lighthouse itself has been preserved thanks to local preservation efforts. Visitors can explore the island, enjoy the coastal scenery, and appreciate the rich history of this charming lighthouse. The island's resurgent coastal forest, composed mainly of white oak and Eastern red cedar, provides a natural habitat for various wildlife.
