Fayerweather Island Light, a historic beacon in Bridgeport, Connecticut, offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and maritime history. Situated on Fayerweather Island, also known as Black Rock Harbor Light, the lighthouse marks the entrance to Black Rock Harbor, a significant port of entry during the 1700s.
The original lighthouse, a 40-foot octagonal wooden tower, was built in 1808 after the government purchased land from David Fayerweather. However, a hurricane destroyed it in 1821. The current lighthouse, constructed in 1823, stands 47 feet tall and is made of sandstone ashlar with rubble mortar.
For 125 years, the lighthouse played a vital role in guiding ships into the harbor. The island has a rich history, including stories of Kate Moore, a lighthouse keeper credited with saving 21 lives. Today, the lighthouse is part of Seaside Park and is accessible via a breakwater.
Visitors can explore the island's coastal forest, home to various wildlife, including nesting birds. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the grounds offer stunning views and a chance to connect with nature. However, some visitors have noted issues with litter and graffiti.

Walking
From the end of Barnum Boulevard in Seaside Park, walk west along the breakwater that connects to Fayerweather Island. The walk is mildly strenuous and involves navigating a rocky path. Exercise caution due to uneven terrain. Seaside Park entry fees may apply. Out-of-state guests may have to pay a higher fee. There are no additional costs associated with walking the breakwater.
Public Transport
Take a bus or train to the Bridgeport Transportation Center. From there, connect to the Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority (GBTA) bus route to Seaside Park. From the bus stop, walk along Barnum Boulevard to the park entrance and then follow the walking directions along the breakwater to Fayerweather Island Light. Bus fares are approximately $1.75 per ride. Park entry fees and breakwater access are additional and may vary.
