Situated on Fayerweather Island, also known as Black Rock Harbor Light, the lighthouse marks the entrance to Black Rock Harbor, a significant port of entry during the 1700s.The original lighthouse, a 40-foot octagonal wooden tower, was built in 1808 after the government purchased land from David Fayerweather. However, a hurricane destroyed it in 1821. The current lighthouse, constructed in 1823, stands 47 feet tall and is made of sandstone ashlar with rubble mortar.For 125 years, the lighthouse played a vital role in guiding ships into the harbor. The island has a rich history, including stories of Kate Moore, a lighthouse keeper credited with saving 21 lives. Today, the lighthouse is part of Seaside Park and is accessible via a breakwater.Visitors can explore the island's coastal forest, home to various wildlife, including nesting birds. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the grounds offer stunning views and a chance to connect with nature. However, some visitors have noted issues with litter and graffiti.
