Discover more about Judges Cave

Judges Cave, located in New Haven, Connecticut, is more of a rock shelter than a traditional cave. It comprises a collection of large boulders that create small overhanging spaces. The site's historical significance stems from its use as a refuge by Edward Whalley and William Goffe, two English judges who signed the death warrant of King Charles I in 1649. Following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Charles II sought to punish those involved in his father's execution. Whalley and Goffe fled to the American colonies and were sheltered by sympathetic locals in New Haven. For a few weeks in May 1661, they hid in the rock formation now known as Judges Cave. The cave offered a secluded hiding place, and local residents provided them with food. According to legend, the judges were eventually driven from the cave by a panther. Today, Judges Cave is a historical landmark within West Rock Ridge State Park. Visitors can explore the cave and learn about its history via a plaque on the western side of the rock formation. The surrounding park offers hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and picnic spots. The Regicides Trail, named in honor of Whalley and Goffe, passes by the cave. The park is open from 8 am to sunset for walk-in access.
