Discover more about Butterfly Conservatory

Nestled in Upper El Castillo, near the majestic Arenal Volcano, the Butterfly Conservatory is more than just a butterfly exhibit; it's a dedicated Nature Regeneration Project. Founded in 2002 by a US holiday maker enchanted with the nature of Arenal, the conservatory strives to develop, promote, and support environmental education and sustainable development relating to the regeneration of rainforest habitat and the butterflies native to the Arenal area of Costa Rica. Here, you can explore six domed habitats that replicate the natural Costa Rican ambiance for butterflies, a ranarium, an insect museum, and a medicinal herb garden. Wander along trails through a botanic garden and alongside the river, immersing yourself in the sounds and sights of nature. The conservatory is home to the largest exhibition of butterflies in Costa Rica, with four different atriums filled with 30 different species. Each atrium guides guests through a unique section of the rainforest where guests can experience the butterflies in their natural habitats. The Metamorphosis Tour provides a practical, educational adventure, showcasing how butterflies, frogs, insects, and plants reproduce in their natural environment around the Arenal Volcano. The interactive tour demonstrates the butterfly life cycle and the regeneration of nature in the Arenal area. The conservatory also participates in raising awareness about nature by educating visitors about butterflies, frogs, plants, and other native biodiversity suffering a decline in their natural habitats. More than just butterflies, the conservatory also provides habitat for frogs, turtles, and other amphibians native to the Arenal area. Birding is excellent here, and there are wonderful volcano views.
