Discover more about Refugio Nacional Gandoca-Manzanillo

The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, officially known as Refugio Nacional Mixto de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo, is a protected area on Costa Rica's southeastern Caribbean coast, near the Panama border. Established in 1985, it spans over 5,000 hectares of land and sea, encompassing diverse ecosystems such as tropical rainforests, wetlands, mangroves, and coral reefs. In 2013, the refuge was renamed to honor Jairo Mora Sandoval, an environmentalist who was murdered. The refuge is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including endangered species like the leatherback sea turtle, West Indian manatee and jaguars. It is also home to an impressive array of wildlife, including howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, parrots, dolphins and crocodiles. The refuge's diverse ecosystems provide critical habitats for migratory birds and marine life. The coral reefs teem with vibrant fish, and the beaches serve as nesting sites for sea turtles. Visitors can explore the refuge through a network of hiking trails that wind through the dense jungle, along sandy beaches, and up to viewpoints overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Snorkeling and scuba diving offer intimate views of the coral reefs and tropical fish. The refuge is divided into two main sectors: Manzanillo, the most popular and accessible entrance, and Gandoca, a more remote and challenging entry point. The Gandoca sector is closer to the Panama border. The refuge plays a crucial role in preserving the lowlands of Costa Rica's southern Caribbean region and protecting various species. It also includes the only red mangrove swamp on Costa Rica's Atlantic coast.
