Getting There

Walking

From the center of Santa Elena, the Curi-Cancha Reserve is walkable, taking approximately 45 minutes. Head northeast, following the road towards the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. After El Establo Hotel, the road turns to gravel. Continue for a few minutes until you see a large sign for the reserve on your left. Turn left and walk 300 meters to the entrance.
Public Transport

From Santa Elena, take the white Monteverde bus. The bus departs from the center of town. Tickets cost approximately $1 USD per person each way. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Curi-Cancha Reserve. From the drop-off point, walk uphill roughly 300 meters (0.2 miles) to reach the main entrance.

Taxis are readily available in Santa Elena. A taxi ride from Santa Elena to Curi-Cancha Reserve takes about 8 minutes and typically costs between $8 and $10. Coordinate with the driver for a return pickup if needed.

Curi-Cancha Reserve, whose name translates from Inca as 'Golden Enclosure,' is a privately-owned protected area in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Established in 1997 and opened to the public in 2011, the reserve encompasses 237 acres (96 hectares) of both primary and secondary cloud forest. Curi-Cancha limits the number of daily visitors to ensure a more personal and impactful experience with nature.The reserve boasts approximately 4.3 miles (7 km) of well-maintained trails that meander through diverse habitats, creating an ideal setting for bird and wildlife observation. Birdwatchers will be delighted to discover over 200 species of birds, including the Resplendent Quetzal, Three-wattled Bellbird, and Keel-billed Toucan. Besides birds, visitors may encounter mammals such as agoutis, coatis, sloths, and monkeys. The trails are considered easy to moderate, suitable for all ages and fitness levels.The reserve's history began in 1970 when the Lowther family purchased the land and allowed the forest to regenerate for many years. Today, Curi-Cancha stands as a testament to conservation efforts, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the cloud forest and witness its unique biodiversity.
