Discover more about Barva Volcano

Barva Volcano, also known as Volcán Barva, is a dormant andesitic volcano located in the Heredia Province of Costa Rica, approximately 22 km north of San José. As the highest point in Braulio Carrillo National Park, it stands at an elevation of 2,906 meters (9,534 feet) above sea level. Unlike its more popular, active counterparts, Barva has been dormant for thousands of years, allowing a rich cloud forest to flourish. The volcano features multiple summit craters and parasitic cones, with the three principal summits visible from the Central Valley, giving it the local name of Las Tres Marías (The Three Marys). These craters now cradle serene lagoons, including the Barva Lagoon and Copey Lagoon. Hiking is the main draw, with trails ranging in difficulty and offering stunning views of the lagoons, surrounding cloud forest, and the Central Valley. Popular trails include Cacho de Venado, Laguna Barva, Laguna Copey, and Mirador Vara Blanca. While some historical accounts suggested eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries, geological evidence indicates the last confirmed eruption occurred between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago. The absence of volcanic activity has allowed the surrounding ecosystem to thrive, creating a mystical atmosphere with moss-covered trees, diverse flora, and abundant fauna, including a rich avifauna with over 500 species of resident and migratory birds. Visiting Barva Volcano offers a chance to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in Costa Rica's natural beauty. The weather at the summit can be chilly and unpredictable, so it's wise to dress warmly and be prepared for rain.
