Discover more about Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja

Rincón de la Vieja National Park, established in 1973, protects the area around the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano and its diverse ecosystems. Spanning over 34,000 acres in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, the park's varied terrain ranges from river valleys and lush rainforests to rare tropical dry forests. The park is divided into two main sectors: Las Pailas and Santa Maria. The Las Pailas sector, meaning "The Cauldrons," showcases the volcano's geothermal activity with steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, and natural hot springs. A network of well-maintained hiking trails allows visitors to explore this volcanic landscape. The most popular trail, the Las Pailas loop, is an easy 3.5-kilometer loop that passes a 'volcancito' (small volcano), a seasonal waterfall, and the park's famous mud pots. Other trails lead to the La Cangreja and Escondida Waterfalls, though access to these trails may be limited after 12 PM. The Santa Maria sector, on the Caribbean side, experiences more rainfall, resulting in a vibrant, lush forest. Here, visitors can explore trails, discover hot springs, and learn about traditional cattle ranching. The park's name, “Rincón de la Vieja” (The Old Woman's Corner), comes from a local legend about Princess Curubanda. According to the tale, she lived in exile near the volcano after a tragic love affair, becoming a healer with knowledge of the volcano's medicinal secrets. While hiking to the volcano's summit is currently not permitted, the park offers a variety of activities, including hiking, wildlife watching (over 300 bird species and diverse mammals), and relaxing in the hot springs. Several adventure centers around the park offer ziplining, horseback riding, and river tubing.
