Fortuna Waterfall, Tilaran Range Travel Guide

La Fortuna Waterfall, or Catarata Fortuna in Spanish, is a jewel of Costa Rica, located in the Alajuela Province near the town of La Fortuna. The waterfall has been a landmark for indigenous populations for centuries. After the devastating eruption of the Arenal Volcano in 1968, the region transformed its narrative from one of disaster to one of natural wonder and ecological rebirth.The waterfall dramatically drops from a height of 70-75 meters (230-246 feet) into a refreshing pool. The waterfall is fed by the Fortuna River, which originates in the Arenal Mountain range. The area is part of a biological reserve with around 210 acres of transition premontane tropical wet forest, near the Arenal Volcano National Park.To reach the waterfall's base, visitors descend a well-maintained trail of approximately 500 steps. The descent takes about 10-15 minutes, while the ascent back up may take around 20-30 minutes. Along the way, rest stops and hydration points are available. At the base, a spacious vantage point offers stunning views and photo opportunities. Visitors can swim in the clear waters of the Fortuna River at a safe distance from the falls.The entrance fee contributes to the well-being of the La Fortuna community through the Integral Development Association of La Fortuna (ADIFORT). ADIFORT reinvests the funds in community projects such as road infrastructure, education, sports, culture, and public safety.
