Discover more about The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro

Nestled in the heart of Yamoussoukro, the political capital of Côte d'Ivoire, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace stands as a testament to faith, ambition, and architectural grandeur. Conceived by President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, it was designed to be the world's largest church, a goal it achieved according to Guinness World Records. The basilica is not a cathedral, but rather a minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Peace. Construction commenced in 1985 and was completed in 1989, at a cost that sparked controversy, with estimates ranging from $175 million to $600 million. Despite the economic challenges facing Côte d'Ivoire at the time, Houphouët-Boigny envisioned the basilica as a symbol of national pride and a place of pilgrimage for African Catholics. The basilica's design, by Lebanese architect Pierre Fakhoury, draws inspiration from St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, but with its own distinct character. The dome, while slightly lower than St. Peter's, is topped with a larger cross, bringing the total height to 158 meters (518 feet). The interior is adorned with 75,000 square feet of French contemporary stained glass, and Italian marble. One of the stained-glass panels even depicts President Houphouët-Boigny kneeling next to Jesus. The basilica can accommodate 18,000 worshippers, with 7,000 seated and 11,000 standing. The surrounding plaza can hold up to 300,000 people. Despite its size, regular services are attended by only a few hundred people. Visitors can explore the basilica's grounds, which include French-style gardens inspired by Versailles. The atmosphere is generally serene, offering a space for contemplation and appreciation of the basilica's architectural details.
