Discover more about Sea Organ

The Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje) is a captivating architectural marvel located on Zadar's waterfront. Created by architect Nikola Bašić, it was unveiled to the public on April 15, 2005, as part of a project to revitalize the city's coastline following extensive damage in World War II. The reconstruction had left the waterfront with a bland concrete wall, and Bašić envisioned a way to reconnect the city with its maritime heritage. The Sea Organ is designed as a series of polyethylene tubes and a resonating cavity concealed beneath large marble steps that descend into the Adriatic Sea. As waves interact with these tubes, they create air pressure that produces random yet harmonic sounds. The result is a constantly evolving melody that shifts with the sea's rhythm, offering a unique and soothing experience for visitors. The organ spans approximately 70 meters of shoreline and incorporates 35 pipes of varying lengths, diameters, and slopes. The Sea Organ has had a significant impact on Zadar's culture and tourism, drawing visitors from around the world. It has transformed the waterfront into a vibrant public space where locals and tourists gather to listen to the sea's music, especially during sunset. The installation won the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006. Nearby, you can also find the Monument to the Sun, another of Basic's creations, which is a solar-powered installation that puts on a light show at night.
