Discover more about Zavratnica

Zavratnica Bay, nestled within the Velebit Nature Park, is a captivating natural wonder on the Croatian Adriatic coast. Often described as a 'miniature fjord', this 900-meter-long inlet boasts dramatic canyon-like cliffs reaching up to 100 meters, creating a breathtaking backdrop of blue sea and grey stone. Formed by a submerged torrent valley that flooded after the last Ice Age, Zavratnica is home to 129 plant species and diverse marine life. In the early 20th century, the bay became a secluded summer resort for the Viennese and Prague elite, who built paths and viewpoints. The famous Croatian writer Vjenceslav Novak found inspiration here. Adding to its allure is a sunken German military ship from World War II, visible beneath the crystal-clear waters, making it a unique spot for snorkeling and diving. Zavratnica was proclaimed a protected landscape in 1964 and revitalized in late 2024 with upgraded infrastructure. Visitors can enjoy scenic walks, explore the coastline, and discover the bay's rich history and natural beauty.
