    Klis Fortress, known as the 'Key to Dalmatia,' is a historic fortress in Klis, Croatia, strategically positioned on a mountain pass between Kozjak and Mosor mountains. Its history stretches back over two thousand years, with evidence of Illyrian settlements dating to the 2nd century BC. The fortress has been a vital defensive point, controlling the passage from the hinterland to the Dalmatian coast.Throughout its history, Klis Fortress has been under the rule of various powers, including the Romans, Byzantines, Croatians, Ottomans, Venetians, and Austrians. Each has left its mark on the fortress's architecture and history. In the Middle Ages, it was a royal residence and a crucial defense against Ottoman invasions. The Uskoks, Croatian soldiers, famously defended it against the Ottomans for decades. The fortress fell to the Ottomans in 1537 and remained under their control for a century. After the Ottoman period, the Venetians took over until 1797, followed by brief French rule and then Austrian rule until World War I.Today, Klis Fortress is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a chance to explore its ancient walls, towers, and gates. The fortress consists of three parts, each with a separate entrance, showcasing the architecture from Venetian and Austro-Hungarian rule. The site gained additional fame as a filming location for the city of Meereen in the popular TV series 'Game of Thrones'.
